Bloom Creatives

Write. Create. Impact.

Crafting stories, shaping voices

Fruit of May is a magazine dedicated to culture, identity, and narrative journalism.

From this foundation, we created Bloom Youth Press, a youth journalism division designed to train the next generation of writers through real reporting and publication.

Bloom Youth Press gives students hands-on experience in:

  • Interviewing real people

  • Writing feature and profile stories

  • Learning editorial structure

  • Publishing their work in a professional digital magazine environment

Led by a Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism alum with professional newsroom experience, a background in publishing, and experience as a college professor, the program bridges professional journalism practice with youth storytelling education.

Students do more than learn how to write. They become published young journalists. Through the program, students learn real reporting skills, conduct interviews, and publish their own work on Fruit of May’s online youth magazine platform.

The summer cohort of Bloom Youth Press will run for four weeks, beginning Tuesday, July 14, 2026.

Classes meet twice per week in person in Charlotte, North Carolina. Sessions are held in the early evening to accommodate school schedules.

  • Meeting Time: 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM

  • Sessions are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays

  • Location: In-person (Charlotte, NC) — specific location details will be provided upon acceptance

  • Program Start Date: Cohort 1— July 14, 2026

Bloom Youth Press: Youth Journalism Program

Program Overview

Bloom Youth Press is a hands-on journalism program designed to give students real-world experience in reporting, writing, and publishing. This is more than a traditional writing class—students learn how professional journalists develop stories and share them with readers. Fruit of May (FOM) is the umbrella organization that brings together all of our programs and creative initiatives.

Under Fruit of May, there are several branches that focus on different areas of storytelling and creative development: Bloom Creatives, Bloom Talks, Bloom Reads, and Bloom Sessions.

Bloom Youth Press is a program within Bloom Creatives, focused specifically on youth journalism. Through this program, students learn how to report, write, and publish real stories in a professional magazine environment.

Students will learn how to:

  • Report real stories

  • Conduct interviews

  • Write feature and profile articles

  • Revise and edit like journalists

  • Publish their work on a youth magazine platform

By the end of the program, students will leave with published work and a strong writing portfolio.
